Is Laser Hair Removal Actually Permanent?

Let’s talk about how effective you can expect your laser hair removal to be.

Removal v. Reduction

The FDA does not allow laser hair removal to be described as "permanent" because there is some potential for hair regrowth. However, that does not mean that it doesn't work, or that you won't have permanent results.

Unlike other methods of dealing with unwanted hair, laser hair removal actually destroys the hair follicle so that the hair will not regrow.

Hairs that are tough to remove

There are fine, white hairs all over our bodies called “Lanugo” that don’t respond well to lasers. Similarly, grey hair doesn’t respond well to lasers, either. These light-colored hairs aren’t a clear target for the laser, so removing these isn’t as effective. Dark body hair like leg hair or armpit hair typically responds better.

Regrowth after treatment

Occasionally, some people also experience hair regrowth in the areas where they’ve had laser treatments done. This issue can be resolved during a couple of touch-up appointments, and isn’t a cause for concern. Everyone is different, but most people who need touch ups end up coming in once a year or every 6 months. Many people don’t need touch ups at all!

Overall, laser hair removal is effective for certain candidates. Hair type and color as well as the color contrast between hair and skin color are big factors that inform how effective laser hair removal will be.
