How to Prepare and Take Care Of Your Skin During Laser Hair Removal

When you’re trying to get smooth skin forever, you want to make sure you’re doing your part. Let’s break down how you can take care of your skin before, during, and after laser hair removal.

Before each appointment

Master your skincare routine

Avoid anything abrasive or damaging to the skin for 1 month before your first appointment. Make sure your skin care doesn’t involve anything with alpha hydroxy acid or Retin A in it and don’t do any drastic chemical peels.

Avoid sun exposure

Stay out of the sun for 1 month prior to treatment. Suntanned skin cannot be treated with lasers, so if you’re out and about use sunscreen SPF 25 or more at all times. Be aware of your sun exposure so that you don’t accidentally get tanned or burned.

Don't use alternative tanning methods

Don’t get spray tans or use self tanning creams for 1 - 2 weeks prior to your appointment.

After each appointment

Redness is okay

You may notice redness and bumps at the treatment site which may last for a few moments to a few hours. It is normal for the area to feel like a slight sunburn for a few hours. You may use a cold compress or the gel you’re provided with to soothe any redness.

Itching is normal

About 1 in 10 people will have some itching after treatment. Bothersome itching can be treated with a cold compress, Benadryl cream, oral antihistamine (Benadryl, Allegra, Claritin). If there is no improvement, call us to discuss other solutions.

You can wear makeup

Makeup may be used after treatment just be sure to use moisturizer or the after-treatment gel under your makeup. Moisturizer will help the dead hair to exfoliate from the follicle, so use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

During your laser hair removal journey

No other hair removal

Do not use any other hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of your laser treatments (tweezing, waxing, depilatories) as it will prevent you from achieving your best result. But SHAVING is okay!

These guidelines may sound like a lot, but really these are just ensuring that your laser hair removal treatment is as painless as possible and produces the best results.
